How To Set Up
How To Set Up
1. Tie it on
Use the included 10 ft leader and connect it to your main line with a double uni knot (step-by-step guide above). That knot sets your bait depth.
2. Watch the drift
If the FATKAT lays sideways, your bait is dragging on the bottom — your leader’s too long.
Shorten it by tying an overhand knot a foot or so higher up the leader.
3. Dial it in
Keep adjusting until the FATKAT floats upright. Now you’re perfectly suspended in the strike zone — where the big ones bite.

We back our gear. If your FATKAT Float breaks during normal use in the first year, just send us a picture and a quick note about how it happened. We’ll replace it — simple as that.
Why? Because we’re confident in the build — and your feedback helps us keep making this thing tougher, better, and more dialed in for real anglers.
FATKAT Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Get Started?
How Do I Get Started?
How does the FATKAT rig work?
Setting up is fast and easy — just one knot, and you’re fishing:
1. Tie it on
Use a double uni knot to connect your main line to the 10 ft leader. That knot sets your bait depth — the bobber slides freely but won’t rise past it.
2. Cast + Drift
Toss it into current or wind drift — the bait naturally suspends just off the bottom, where catfish hang out.
3. Watch Your FATKAT
If it lays sideways, your leader’s too long. Shorten it by tying a new bobber stop (a simple overhand or alpine butterfly loop works great).
Keep adjusting until the FATKAT stands up vertical — That's it. Let the current carry your bait naturally into the strike zone.
What setup do you use?
We chase big ones, so we use:
- 50 lb braided main line
- The included 50 lb leader
- Reel - Go to 6000, but size 3000 and above will work
- Rod - Go to is 9ft Medium Heavy, but Medium and above will work. I have used it on ultralight... but that was just messing around.
Mono holds up better against catfish’s rough teeth. I like the braid for casting distance.
Do I need special gear?
Nope. The FATKAT works with your current catfishing setup — rod, reel, main line, and bait. Just tie it on and go.
How do I adjust depth?
If your FATKAT lays sideways on the water, your bait is dragging. Simply tie a new overhand knot a bit shorter on your leader to lift your bait up. Repeat until the bobber stands upright — boom, you’re in the strike zone.
Is there a bobber stop?
No traditional stop needed — your double uni knot does that job.
To adjust depth, just tie knots along your leader (square knots or loops).
Lately, I’ve been experimenting with the alpine butterfly loop — easy to untie, adjust, and re-tie. Might be a game-changer. Still testing, but it's looking promising.
Do I need a barrel swivel?
Technically, you can use one — but I don’t recommend it.
Swivels jam at the rod tip and mess with casting long leaders.
A double uni knot gives you a clean, castable connection that slides right through the guides.
Want to keep a swivel in your rig? Let me know why and I’ll help you tweak it.
What's The Best Way To Fish This Rig?
What's The Best Way To Fish This Rig?
How do I fish it (tactics)?
🎯 Target moving water
Cast into current — like riffles, seams, or rapids — and let the FATKAT drift naturally. If cats are there, they’ll usually hammer it within 10–15 casts. No bite? Move to a new spot.
🥧 Cover the whole stretch
Fan-cast like you’re slicing a pie. Start far, then work closer in 5 ft at a time. Don’t forget to hit behind boulders and eddies — catfish love hanging in that slack water.
🎣 Keep it natural
Let the FATKAT do its thing. Keep your bail open, your rod tip high, and your line slack. The second you add tension, your bait rises — and you’re out of the strike zone. I just "nurse" line off the reel to keep the drift looking natural.
🚫 Snag tip
If you snag, don’t yank. Walk upstream and 9 times out of 10 it’ll pop free. Easy.
🧠 Bait tips
Use what’s local: perch, bluegill, shad — live or cut. Chicken liver and hotdogs work too, but I always go fresh when I can.
Bottom line: Drift it right and you’ll get bit. Let me know what you tried — happy to help you dial it in.
Can I use live bait?
Absolutely. We’ve used everything from perch to shad to bluegill — all live.
The FATKAT floats live bait beautifully, and it works just like with cut bait.
Is it good for lakes?
Yep. In lakes, the FATKAT suspends bait off the bottom and catches wind or subtle underwater currents to drift it around.
In rivers, the current does more of the work — but it performs great either way.
Will it work in deep rivers?
Yes. You’ll just need to tweak the setup:
- Add a bobber stop 20–30 ft up your main line, or however deep you are fishing
- Slide on an optional bead, then the FATKAT
- Add weight to the leader
- Tie the leader to the main line with double unit knot
Deepwater setup:
Hook → weight → double uni knot → FATKAT → bobber stop (25 ft up main line)
You still get the same natural drift — just deeper.
Do people really use bobbers for catfish?
Oh yeah — but not the dinky red-and-whites from Walmart.
We’re talking FATKAT bobbers — tough, castable, and made for heavy baits and big fish. No better way to fish rivers or lakes when you're targeting catfish, period.
Will it snag?
I fish a rocky, tree-filled river 3 times a week, from February to November. I used to lose dozens of bottom rigs every season. Since switching to the FATKAT rig, I lose maybe 2 or 3. Seriously.
Here’s why it works:
✅ Snag-Resistant by Design
- The small-profile weight and in-line setup keep your bait just off the bottom — where the fish are, but not the snags
- The circle hook doesn’t dig into cover like traditional hooks.
- And the bobber and weight actually fight each other — if the sinker tucks under a log, the bobber pulls it back out.
✅ Cast the Right Way
👉 Avoid casting directly upstream.
Instead, cast across the current or slightly downstream, and let the rig drift naturally. That way, if your bait bumps into a rock or log, the current — and your position upstream — will help it back out instead of burying it deeper.
✅ Pro Tip to Free a Snag
If you do snag, just walk upstream and pull. Since the rig floated down, it’ll usually back right out. I save 90% of snags that way — easy.
Bottom line: once you fish this rig, you’ll get it. Most folks say the same thing:
“I’m never going back to bottom rigs.”
How Tough is it?
How Tough is it?
What’s the FATKAT bobber made of?
A custom, plant-based, TÜV OK Marine–certified biodegradable material.
- Tough enough for years of use
- Only breaks down when lost and exposed to high levels of bacteria
- Won't degrade in your tackle box, car, or garage.
- No foam, no plastic, no guilt
We chose this material to keep our waters clean. Lose one? Nature handles it.
Will it break down during regular use?
Nope. It only breaks down when lost in nature — high bacterial load is the trigger.
It’ll last for years in your tackle box, on your rod, or in storage. Fish hard without worry.
How long does it take to break down?
Roughly 90% gone in 2 years, based on real-world testing and material certs.
Think of it like a leaf — it floats for a while, after a long time it will eventually get waterlogged and start breaking down naturally (no microplastics).
I’ve got one in my backyard now, tracking it in real-time.
Is it durable?
Absolutely. The FATKAT is built like a tank. We’ve tested it on monsters. But if something ever fails, you’re covered — see below.
